Estimation of heating energy consumption of a single-family house in the conditions of urban heat island in the city of Coyhaique, Chile

Abstract
Under the conditions of the urban heat island (UHI), the thermal conditions of certain parts of the city are changing, which in turn can affect the energy consumption (EC) of the houses for heating and cooling. The best method for studying of atmospheric UHI is continuous meteorological observations in various parts of the city. Data from 6 NETATMO sensors from October 2017 to September 2018 were used to analyze thermal heterogeneity in the city of Coyhaique. Based on these data, the annual values ofHeating Degree-Days with base temperature of 18.3 ° C (HDD18.3) (v) were calculated.At the same time, a 3-D simulation of a single-family isolated house in the Revit (ii) program was realized. At 8 points around the city (i), heating EC of this house was simulated in Green Builduing Studio (GBS) based on Mesoscale Meteorological Model v.5 (2006) meteorological data (MM5) (the spatial resolution of this data is larger than the size of the city).Based on the results of this simulation (iii), a linear relationship was found between heating EC and HDD18.3 around the city (iv). With this linear relationship and measured HDD18.3 values in 2017-2018 (v), values of heating EC in different parts of the city (vi) were restored.It was found that, based on MM5 data around the city, the heating EC of simulated house is in the range 129-142kWh/m2yr, while, according to the statistical model and measurements by NETATMO sensors, the expected heating EC of the same house inside the city, will vary in the interval 72-100kWh/m2yr.Based on this, it can be concluded that further detailed studies are needed to investigate influence of the UHI on the EC of houses in different geographical areas and cities of various sizes.
