The nature of the harsh realities and complex challenges we face today, within our organizations, our cities, our states, our countries, and the world at large, demand the development of solutions, and of new products, processes, services, unique experiences, and the business models to deliver them, which transcend conventional approaches and ways of thinking. Thus, Imagination, Creativity, Innovation, Design, and Entrepreneurship (I/C/I/D/E) are emerging as the currency of the 21st Century, and as the potential sources of effective responses to these realities and challenges, and in doing so, as the engines for economic growth.

This highly interactive lecture will focus on inhibitors, obstacles, and barriers to creativity and innovation, and also, on strategies, processes, tools, and resources for overcoming them. Specifically, the lecture will provide answers to the following questions

What are some current challenges and opportunities for I/C/I/D/E that organizations and individuals are facing today?
What are some of the key inhibitors, obstacles, and barriers for I/C/I/D/E, and what can be done about them?
What roles do provocative, convergent, divergent, and lateral thinking play in I/C/I/D/E?
How do you assemble and develop high performance teams for I/C/I/D/E?
What strategies, processes, tools, and resources are available for organizations and individuals in their pursuit of I/C/I/D/E?
What are some examples of implementation within Texas A&M University of I/C/I/D/E?

2 “An Integrated Framework for Enhancing the Quality of Life for People and Place in Vulnerable and Disadvantaged Communities”

As a direct response to the problems, needs, and aspirations of vulnerable and disadvantaged communities in Texas, the College of Architecture (CARC) at Texas A&M University (TAMU) has been developing and implementing a framework for enhancing the quality of life for people and place through two complementary special programs.

The first is the Colonias Program (CP), which was created in 1991 by the Texas State Legislature to provide residents of the predominantly Hispanic disadvantaged populations of the Colonias of Texas along the Texas/Mexico border (defined by The Office of the Texas Secretary of State as residential areas that lack some of the basic living necessities, such as potable water and sewer systems, electricity, paved roads and safe and sanitary housing), with access to programs and services that would reduce their isolation, increase their ability to become self-sufficient, and enhance the quality of their life and of the place where they live.

The second is the Texas Target Communities Program (TTCP), which has provided technical assistance on land use planning and design to small, low-resourced communities across the state for a quarter-century (outside the geographic region served by the CP), and is currently seeking to diversify the scope of the technical support it offers, to move from short-term independent projects focused on land use planning and design, toward more long-term, integrated efforts addressing the full spectrum of challenges (e.g., civic, environmental, economic, etc.) a typical a community encounters.

This lecture will focus on sharing:

The vision and mission of the CP and the TTCP
The strategic, tactical, and operational framework of each program
Selected practical knowledge gained and lessons learned over the years of operation
