Editorial of special issue on ‘transport, gender, culture’

Abstract

Modern cities, and their transport systems sometimes appear to be built to benefit able-bodied men belonging to privileged socio-economic groups. Women and feminised “others” and their transport needs often fall unnoticed or neglected, which unfortunately gives rise to serious problems of transport equality (Loukaitou-Sideris, 2020).

This Special Issue represents an attempt to explore research gaps related to the above, spotlighting gender interactions with transport and mobility, which are relevant to both real-world planning situations and further academic study. Several papers in this Special Issue are based in Latin America (Colombia and Chile), reflecting a powerful upsurge in social movements for women’s rights and specific cultural norms in this region. However, contributions are also from Canada and Germany witnessing a problem that is spread worldwide. The authors employ a variety of methods, both quantitative and qualitative. The first range from simple descriptive statistics of survey data (such as time-use diaries) to regression models to GIS mapping. Qualitative methods include ethnographic observations and in-depth interviews with both experts and laypersons.
